Roaring galaxies
March 2013: Leo the Lion provides excellent targets to begin your spring galaxy voyage.

In his poem “Locksley Hall,” Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote, “In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” Not so for amateur astronomers! When spring flowers bloom and robins sing, our fancy turns to galaxies. For me, the words spring and galaxies bring to mind the seemingly endless riches of the Virgo cluster. But if you’ve never sailed into this galaxy-rich ocean, you’ll want to trim your sails in some easier-to-navigate waters. Leo provides such an opportunity.
