Some of you may have already noticed the new section in the rotating box on our home page promoting the Young Astronomers Video Contest, but, in case you haven’t, I want you to check it out, break out those cameras, and start shooting. Because, frankly, I’m really excited for this contest.

Now, let me offer some advice to those of you who plan to enter the contest (which I hope is many of you). Start with some research because you do have to document where you’re getting your facts and figures. For those of you answering “Is Pluto a planet or not?” (grades 6-8), check out some of Associate Editor Daniel Pendick’s blogs on the topic. It might be a good starting place in making your argument. And for those with the question “What is a black hole?” (grades 9-12), search our News section, and subscribers can reference our annual indexes. Information on black holes is all over this site.

While doing your research, check the official rules. You’d be surprised how many times groups get disqualified for this. Notice that “there can be no plagiarism of songs or videos.” Your first thought might be, “Bummer.” But don’t get discouraged. Have you thought about rapping an answer to your question? It’s fun, creative, informative, and shows serious talent if you can rhyme Pluto with something.

Speaking of creativity, it’s a key with most contests. But don’t think to be creative means you have to come up with an awesome rap as good as that one about the LHC that’s up on YouTube. Just think outside the box a little. Even if it seems stupid to you, it might be entertaining to others (some of us here at Astronomy do have very weird senses of humor). For example, we’re in the middle of a presidential election right now. Over-the-top debate, anyone? And if you’re racking your brains for an idea, try asking your school’s drama club, those crazy kids on student council (I can say that because I was one of them), or … just maybe … your parents.

Just have fun with this because it’s a cool opportunity (with some great prizes). I’m honestly a little jealous. I miss the days of making obnoxious but informative videos about this fundraiser or that high school event. I even entered a contest or two with my friends (for the sake of my pride, I won’t share what they were for or if we won). So start getting ideas, putting them together, and I hope to see your videos soon.
