Crepuscular rays - Crepuscular rays can be beautiful even though their presence always indicates that clouds are in the area. The rays seem to start at the Sun’s position (even if it’s below the horizon) and spread outward through the air. The rays are, however, nearly parallel shafts of light. They become visible because of the contrast between them and the shadows of the same shape created by clouds. The photographer noted that the two birds wanted to be part of the picture. (Canon 60D DSLR, Canon EF35-80mm f/4-5.6 III lens set to f/7.1, ISO 200, 1/400-second exposure, taken June 4, 2012, at 7:32 p.m. CDT, from DeKalb County, Missouri)
