Who are we?

March 2013: We may all be different, but we each get something from the wonders of the universe.

What does the word astronomer mean? When the topic is “people contemplating the universe,” we fall into distinct categories. Which of them are you?

We’re a motley group. Yet the cosmic piñata contains such a vast assortment of goodies that cool stuff keeps tumbling out no matter what we’re seeking.

In describing the many faces of astronomers in "Who are we?" you uncharacteristically missed a significant faction.

I can't speak for others who are active in "pubic outreach" astronomy, but it is that aspect of the 'sport' that provides the greatest satisfaction for me. I suggest you consider adding that as a category of astronomer with which some would primarily associate.

In addition to an active astronomy club (NJAA) that promotes and welcomes the public to our observatory and programs, there are many members who venture beyond the club grounds. I'm fortunate to work with great public school teachers and classes through Project ASTRO partnerships. I'm privileged to share my passion as a volunteer astronomer through a program at our national parks. Members from clubs nationwide provide thousands of hours of programming and star parties for seniors, scouts, schools and neighbors at local libraries, community centers or parks. It's not only a great way to "edutain" and cultivate interest in astronomy, it helps to promote local astronomy club awareness, programming and membership.
